Farmer kidnapped and drowned for alleged tip-off on illegal land deal

A farmer in central China managed to escape and alert police after he was kidnapped by a fellow villager and sent to a coastal city several hundred kilometers away where he was thrown into sea for allegedly tipping-off on an illegal land deal, The Beijing News reported today.
Police said the kidnapper Xiong Yunjun will be charged for murder, according to the report.
The farmer Zhou Binwen told the newspaper he reported to authorities in Yongzhou City in Hunan Province in 2010 that Xiong illegally took up land belonging to villagers for a real estate project.
After receiving the tip-off, Yongzhou land authorities demanded suspension of the project, which led to conflicts between Zhou and Xiong, the report said.
About 9am on June 2, Zhou received a phone call from a community official, inviting him for lunch. When Zhou arrived, the official failed to show up while Xiong suddenly appeared and dragged him into his car, the report said.
Xiong later tied Zhou up and stuffed him in the trunk. He drove two days to Shishi City in southeastern Fujian Province, it added.
"Xiong covered my eyes and tied a stone to me before throwing me into the sea," Zhou told the newspaper.
The farmer managed to loosen the iron wire around the stone with his mouth and later freed his hands to swim back to shore, the report said.
Shishi police soon detained Xiong after receiving Zhou's report. Police said the community official didn't know about Xiong's kidnap plan and thought he wanted to invite Zhou for lunch.
