Farmer who ‘harvested’ gold from field should return stolen loot

A FARMER in central Hunan Province was ecstatic at finding gold chains in his vegetable field but sad when he had to turn over the gold to police since the necklaces were stolen from a gold shop.

The farmer, surnamed Ma, was surprised to dig out more than 20 gold chains wrapped in a flowery cloth as he was planting vegetables in his field in late September, according to the Strait Herald. He pocketed the gold instead of turning it in.

The gold turned out to be the loot of a couple accused of stealing the chains and burying them in Ma’s field.

The couple visited a gold shop in Longyan City in east Fujian Province on September 12. The owner, surnamed Zeng, called police after discovering that nine gold necklaces and 17 gold bracelets were missing after this couple left his shop. Since the stolen gold chains weighed 240 grams and are valued at a total of almost 100,000 yuan (US$16,388), the police set up a special team and caught the couple about two weeks later in Hunan Province.

Police said the suspects confessed and said where they had hidden the gold. Police said the farmer would not be charged.
