Farmer wrongly imprisoned 12 years in murder wins 1m yuan compensation

A FARMER in central China’s Henan Province who was imprisoned for 12 years after being wrongly convicted of murder has won approval of national compensation for nearly 1 million yuan (US$164,700).

Li Huailiang would be given 788,227 yuan for having been detained for 4,282 days and another 200,000 yuan for mental suffering, Pingdingshan City Intermediate People’s Court said today.

Li was freed two days after the court acquitted him on April 25, saying the evidence against him was insufficient.

He had applied for state compensation of up to 3.8 million yuan. The money is intended to compensate Li for the violation of his personal freedom, mental suffering, medical costs, loss of work and legal fees.

Li had been the prime suspect in the rape and slaying of a 13-year-old girl that occurred in Yexian County in the city of Pingdingshan in August 2001 after he visited the crime scene.

From 2001 to 2006, Li stood trial seven times and was given three different verdicts. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, death and death with reprieve, respectively. But all three verdicts were ultimately overturned due to a lack of evidence.
