Farmer's horror after criminal steals ID
AN east China farmer has been notified of his life sentence for drug dealing and gun making – crimes committed by a stranger in south China who had stolen his identification.
Zheng Guanqun received the letter while working at a small flour factory in his hometown in Xieqiao Town of Jiangsu Province's Fuyang City, today's Anhui Business newspaper reported.
Zheng first learned about the ID theft in 2007 when Jiang Yunhuai, vice director of Xieqiao police station, told him that Guangzhou police in south China had notified them that they had caught a drug dealer with Zheng's ID papers.
He tried to contact Guangzhou police to correct the error, but in vain, despite the help of his local police.
The error caused huge trouble for Zheng, because he was hardly able to leave his hometown, he told the newspaper.
Last year when he went to Anhui's capital Hefei City on business, he was caught only 10 minutes after checking in a hotel. His so-called criminal record was immediately sent to the local police.
In southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, a woman is also seeking a police correction after eight years' harassment for being mistakenly labeled a drug user and trafficker on her ID card.
The mistake occurred back in 2002 when a neighbor used Hu Ya's personal information when she was caught for drug trafficking.
