Farmers storm chemical plant for polluting crops
AN industrial park hosting more than 180 chemical plants in Binzhou, eastern Shandong Province is blamed for contaminating nearby farmland and causing cancers in a rising number of villagers.
The Binzhou Industrial Park occupies a large area of farmland and discharges untreated chemical wastes that have killed cotton crops in the vicinity and are posing threat to the health of local people, villagers said.
Lizaitian Village residents said the odorous air they had been breathing for about seven years caused rhinitis and respiratory problems among the elders, International Business Daily reported today.
"Toxic fumes from Shandong Qiaochang Chemical Co killed my cottons," a villager surnamed Xue said. "Before the plant was built, the whole village could yield 6,000 kilograms of cotton per hectare. Nowadays the output is less than half of that."
Qiaochang Chemical promised to compensate the villagers with 1,500 yuan (US$238) for each hectare of farmland but didn't keep its word. Outraged villagers stormed its plant to vent their frustration and demanded environmental cleanup. But their efforts were futile because the local government was protecting major taxpayers.
But officials of the industry park and the local government made no comments on villager protests.
