Farmers use formaldehyde to keep cabbage fresh

A hazardous chemical solution was found widely used in cabbage preservation in east China's Shandong Province, the Modern Express reported today.
Many vegetable growers sprayed a kind of pungent solution on celery cabbage to keep them fresh and the vegetables were later tested positive of formaldehyde.
The use of vegetable preservatives is no longer a secret among Shandong farmers. They said some preservatives are high-tech products and others are chemical agents. Some people use formaldehyde as well.
Local food inspection authorities said all vegetables were tested before entering the market but chemical preservatives have not been included in their tests.
Formaldehyde is harmful to human skin and respiratory and nervous systems. It can cause cancer and fetal deformation, according to the World Health Organization.
