Fashion brands withdraw rabbit wool products after chilling video
Top fashion brands including Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein have decided to stop selling their Angora wool products after an undercover video released by PETA, an animal rights group, exposed the cruelty suffered by Angora rabbits in Chinese farms.
The video was shot by a PETA Asia investigator who visited Angora rabbit farms in China and secretly filmed the process of workers yanking the fur out of rabbits’ skin as they screamed in pain.
“Such animal abuse is totally unacceptable,” said Fu Xiarong, PR manager at H&M China. “We have now removed all Angora rabbit products from our stores and we also offer a refund for customers who would like to return their purchased Angora products.”
A spokesperson for Marks & Spencer told Shanghai Daily that they are making additional visits to these farms and will not place any orders for products containing Angora wool until these visits are concluded and reviewed.
“We put animal welfare at the heart of our business and we are committed to responsible sourcing of raw materials, including Angora wool,” the spokesperson said.
According to PETA, Angora rabbits suffer the torture every three months for three to five years before their throats are slit and replaced by new rabbits. In the video, rabbits were locked in solitude in tiny, filthy cages after going through the ordeal.
