Fast food chain probes hygiene horror stories
FAST food chain Country Style Cooking has promised a full investigation into reports that staff reuse oil from leftovers and work in unhygienic conditions.
Li Hong, chairwoman of the Chongqing-based chain, China's first US-listed fast food company, made the pledge on her Weibo.com microblog yesterday, vowing to punish staff responsible.
This comes after an undercover reporter from local news portal Chengdu.com worked for a month in the kitchen in a CSC restaurant in Chengdu, capital of Chongqing's neighboring Sichuan Province.
While CSC, which has 141 restaurants nationwide, boasts of a clean environment and safe food, the reporter found restaurant staff separated oil from leftovers and reused it.
A cook surnamed Ruan at another restaurant told the website that this was a common practice to cut costs.
It was also discovered that staff put frozen meat on the dirty floor and then cooked it without washing it first.
Staff also used their bare hands to stir eggs, according to the report.
Continuing the catalogue of hygiene horrors, Chengdu.com claimed staff shrugged off concerns when a dead rat was found in the kitchen.
On its official microblog, CSC said it had strict rules on food production and storage. It has started a probe and would announce the results as soon as possible, it added.
CSC Restaurant China Co was first listed on the New York Stock Exchange in September 2010.
