Fatal blast tied to illegal parking
FAILING to follow designated transportation routes and parking in forbidden areas were the key factors that led to a blast killing at least eight people and injuring another 200-plus in southwest China's Guizhou Province on Tuesday, police said yesterday.
The explosion at an expressway off-ramp near the city of Fuquan also damaged six nearby schools, prompting the suspension of classes for more than 6,000 students.
More than 50 students and seven teachers were among the people injured. As of yesterday, 218 people remained in hospital for treatment, with nine in critical condition, local health authority said.
Tuesday morning's accident happened when two cargo trucks loaded with about 70 metric tons of explosives blew up in front of a motor vehicle testing station in Fuquan.
The two trucks did not follow the scheduled route and parked near the testing station, which was prohibited, local police said. One truck caught fire, causing the blast.
People responsible for the accident have been detained as the investigation continues, police said.
The trucks belonged to a local transportation company in Fuquan, the Xinhua news agency reported.
During the accident, windows were shattered in nearby houses, and cars parked near the site were severely damaged. A nearby grain warehouse was also seriously damaged.
Four primary schools and two middle schools were closed, said officials with the city's education bureau, which is sending technicians to check the safety of the school buildings whose windows were shattered in the blast.
The city government has earmarked 5 million yuan (US$787,000) for medical treatment, relocation of those whose houses were damaged, and other blast-related expenses, Xinhua said.
