Fatal mall blaze blamed on safety loopholes

AUTHORITIES in northeast China's Jilin Province said safety loopholes in the management of a shopping mall are responsible for a 12-hour fire that killed 19, injured 24 others and gutted the large building.

Cui Zhenji, vice mayor of Jilin City in the province, said they found some hidden perils in the design and management of the Jilin Commercial Building, which was ravaged on Friday, China News Weekly reported today.

Cui didn't give more details but said investigation was under way.

Many shopkeepers blamed the 20-year-old shopping center for their losses in the blaze.
