Fatal stabbing suspect drunk: police

THE man who stabbed two people to death on Thursday night in downtown Beijing was drunk at the time, police said yesterday.

The tragedy occurred about 7pm in the Dashilan area of the city.

The injured were taken to a nearby hospital and two security guards died later despite emergency medical treatment, police sources said. The 14 injured are all in a stable condition.

The suspect, Zhang Jianfei, 46, was captured at the scene by police. He is a native of Jilin City of northeast China's Jilin Province.

The police sources said Zhang had created many drunken disturbances in Jilin.

After the fatal knife incident, the municipal government has sent armed police to patrol major downtown areas of the city.
