Father and son hospitalized after drinking hot chocolate laced with disinfectant at McDonald's outlet

FAST food chain McDonald's blamed a worker at one of its outlets in southwest China’s Chongqing City for brewing a drink with a disinfectant that sickened a father and a son.

The incident happened around noon on Monday when the father surnamed Feng, 46, took his four-year-old to McDonald's near a metro train station in Liangjiang New Area, Chongqing Evening News reported.

Feng ordered a hot chocolate for the child, who put it aside after having a sip. Not wanting to waste the drink, Feng drank it.

“I took a swig and it tasted sour. I thought they had added Sprite and drank it again,” he said. Minutes later he felt a tingling sensation in his tongue and throat.

Feng checked with the restaurant's staff and they suspected it could be disinfectant and immediately rushed both of them to the hospital.

Medical records showed he was poisoned by disinfectant and suffered digestive tract injuries. His son was safe. They remain in hospital for further checks, the paper reported.

McDonald's told the paper that worker mistook the disinfectant as hot water. It said it would take tighten its training and management.
In a statement to Shanghai Daily, McDonald's apologized for the incident and said it was keeping a close watch on the duo and their progress.

Local food and drug watchdog said it was investigating the case.
