Father dies after daughter attempts suicide to save him

THE father of a teenage girl who tried to commit suicide in order to donate her liver to her dad died on Saturday in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province, a Nanjing-based newspaper reported today.

He died one day after seeing his brave daughter for the last time.

"Linlin, dad misses you so much after so many days!" said the man from his hospital bed. He had tears in his eyes after seeing his daughter in a wheelchair on Friday, according to the Modern Express report.

Linlin cried loudly after leaving the hospital ward. Family members said the girl, knowing her father could die in few days, was strong-willed during their final conversation.

Linlin was transferred to Wuxi No. 3 People's Hospital for further treatment of electric blanket burns suffered when she passed out after taking sleeping pills in an attempted suicide, the report said.

She is in stable condition. Family members have not yet told her of her father's death.

Cui Lan, Linlin's mother, thanked donors from all over China and asked them not to give any more money as she though they now have enough for hospital bills.

Linlin took more than 200 sleeping pills on February 4 in an attempt to commit suicide and donate her liver to her seriously ill father.

The father had been hospitalized for more than a month with liver cancer.

The girl had been kept in dark about her father's cancer until she found a hospital report in her mother's purse, according to a previous report by the newspaper.

The father, who had been confined to his home with hepatitis soon after Linlin was born, reportedly only had three months to live, the newspaper said. Cui, also in poor health, has been on early retirement for more than eight years.

The family earned only about 1,000 yuan a month (US$146).

Cui said she and her husband spent nearly 100,000 yuan to treat his cancer, according to the report.
