Father drives daughter, 6, to run marathons

A FATHER in south China has been forcing his six-year-old daughter to run dozens of kilometers every day in the hope that she can win a marathon and lure his runaway wife back.

Yang Feng, of Haikou City in Hainan Province, said he made his daughter train hard because he wanted to win media coverage and turn her into a sports champion who could catch her mother's attention, reported China News Service today.

Yang said he used to have a lovely family until his wife suddenly ran away with all the family's savings.

After several months' efforts to find his wife failed, he decided to train his daughter to become a marathon runner.

"She's just finished running 138 kilometers in two days," Yang told the newspaper. "My target for her is to finish the same distance in one run."

The 138 kilometers is the distance between Yang and his wife's home town. Although Yang said he was concerned about his daughter's health, her puffy toes and swollen feet didn't stop him from driving her to run 345 laps of a 400-meter running track.
