Father sets daughter alight to avenge wife's divorce

A FIERCE father poured gasoline on his three-year-old girl and set her alight in northwestern Shaanxi Province to take revenge on his wife who filed for divorce after long periods of domestic violence.

Cao Xiaoming took his daughter Niuniu to his father-in-law's home in Baofeng Village after his wife, Yang Xiaoting, refused to respond to his repeated online requests for forgiveness, Shaanxi Television Station has reported.

The outraged Cao then poured petrol on his daughter and lit it while shouting: "I don't plan to live! Everyone must die!"

"He was completely insane! He stared at me like a monster," Yang Junliang, Niuniu's grandfather said. Yang Junliang was unable to prevent the ferocity in time as the stronger Cao kicked him away, the report said.

The burning girl writhed in pain on the ground. Yang Junliang, with the help of his neighbor Li Dongrang and Niuniu's uncle Yang Xiaodong, finally overpowered Cao and saved Niuniu.

"She was burnt all over her body. She kept crying, with her hair scorched. It was so scary," Li said.

The injured girl has been admitted to hospital and Cao has been arrested for intentional homicide. Cao told police he burnt his daughter to force his wife to regret her decision.

Yang Xiaoting said her brutal husband often beat her up. He had threatened to smash her home and kill her family members if she dared to end their three-year marriage, she said.
