Father who left dying child at gate not charged
A FATHER who left his dying daughter outside a “safe haven” for unwanted children in the southern city of Guangzhou while it was closed will not face charges.
Prosecutors in Tianhe District said the man, surnamed Chen, left his day-old child in order to “let her survive a little longer.”
Chen and his wife, migrant workers whose monthly earnings total 4,000 yuan, (US$639) couldn’t afford medical fees for the baby.
The child was born on February 22 with an array of serious medical conditions, including heart problems, tracheal deformity and pneumonia.
Doctors said they couldn’t save the girl but could extend her life span, the Procuratorial Daily reported yesterday.
Chen and his family decided to leave her at Guangzhou Children’s Social Welfare Home.
However, he didn’t realize that the facility only accepted children between 7pm and 7am in order to protect privacy.
Chen left the baby at the gate of the home at around noon on February 23.
An hour later, she was discovered in a poor condition and died before doctors arrived.
Chen was traced by police the next day and admitted leaving his daughter outside the home, the paper reported.
As his daughter was suffering from an incurable condition, Chen would only have faced charges of abandonment.
But as he showed the correct attitude toward his crime and didn’t pose any social threat, prosecutors decided not to arrest Chen, the court said.
Since opening in January, the home has received 262 children. Overwhelmed, it stopped taking new arrivals on March 16.
