Father's suicide doubts
THE father of a young man said to have hanged himself in an interrogation room in south China is seeking a reinvestigation into the death.
Police in Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, told a press conference that Xing Kun used a 1-yuan (15 US cents) bill to unlock his manacles and hanged himself using a 175cm-long shoe lace in an area that wasn't overlooked by security cameras.
"It is a shameless lie," Xing Caifang, the victim's father, told yesterday's Southern Metropolis Daily. "How is it even possible to open manacles with paper money?"
The victim's uncle, You Zengqiang, called the police version of events a joke.
Xing Caifang said the family had demanded security videos of the interrogation room.
The six video clips released by Kunming police yesterday did not catch how Xing managed to hang himself. Police said that's because Xing was in a 0.16-square-meter area not covered by the camera.
Prosecutors told the press conference yesterday that the dead man had not been tortured during interrogation.
Xing's family, however, presented pictures of Xing's corpse that was covered with injuries. But those red bruises were only livor mortis, according to prosecutors.
