Fears for child 'scalded by father'

A SEVEN-year-old girl from Guangdong Province who suffered 85 percent burns after allegedly being scalded with boiling water by her father is in a life-threatening condition, it was reported yesterday.

The father, named Lin Shuiquan, was reported by his family and is now under criminal detention by police in Yunfu City, Modern Express newspaper reported.

Officers said his motive was still under investigation.

His daughter, named Lin Qiurong, was receiving treatment at Guangzhou Red Cross Hospital yesterday.

Doctors said she was in conscious but her injuries were very serious and there were concerns over infection and organ failure.

Lin's aunt, Lin Tianyun, told the newspaper that the girl's parents divorced two months after she was born and her father left her with her grandparents. He later lived with another woman, surnamed Mo. According to the aunt, Lin Qiurong's father never took care of her.

On July 19, Lin Shuiquan showed up and said he was taking his daughter for a haircut, and that she would stay with him for a while.

However, last Saturday, the little girl's grandmother heard her knocking on the door and found her standing outside alone. She saw that the child had been seriously scalded and most of her skin had begun to peel.

Lin Qiurong said her father and Mo had done that to her. She also told her doctor that her father locked the door before scalding her.

Lin Shuiquan allegedly confessed to police that he scalded her daughter in a hotel on August 14, and sent her back home when he feared "she was in real danger."
