Feed crabs with contraceptive? You gotta be kidding!
HAIRY crab breeders denied feeding birth-control pills to the famed crustacean to stimulate their growth so as to put this autumn delicacy earlier on the dining table.
A breeders' association based at Yangcheng Lake, west of Shanghai and the traditional supplier of hairy crabs, told Beijing Morning Post on Sunday that it was absolute impossible amid the widespread hearsay online.
Yang Huilong, the association's chairman, explained that birth-control pills or hormonal drugs posed grave threats to the growth of crabs and even their lives. "Fewer breeders dared to take the risks," he added.
Yang also mentioned legal actions if the rumor involves any specific local brand or breeder.
Both Yang and aquatic products distributors in Beijing indicated that the rumor was out of date and was cooked up again and again ahead of the crab season every year.
They also added that Yangcheng with thousands of hectares of space makes it impossibly for breeders to feed crabs in the way the rumor described.
Several Beijing restaurants told the newspaper that more and more customers were coming for hairy crabs and Beijing's quality inspectors also guaranteed strict checks.
Yangcheng Lake is about 3 kilometers northeast of Suzhou and about one hour's drive from Shanghai.
