Fees at 1,400 tourism attractions cut 20 percent for holiday

THE national price watchdog said today it would arrange ticket discounts for many tourism spots during the upcoming weeklong National Day holiday.

The discount would be set at about 20 percent off the regular entrance fees at about 1,400 well-known travel spots in Hubei, Guangdong, Hainan and Yunnan provinces as well as in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

Famous Chinese tourist attractions in these regions, such as Shangri-La, Yungang Grottoes, Wutai Mountain and Shennongjia, would all be covered by the discount plan, said the National Development and Reform Commission.

The watchdog said admission fees at the travel spots would be closely monitored. Local travel managers that fail to provide the discount as ordered would be subject to government punishment.

The initiative is meant to ease travel costs to create a positive environment for enforcement of the country's new Tourism Law, which takes effect on October 1, the National Day.

The law aims to clean up the tourism industry by forcing out illegal operators, and ending price irregularities and arbitrary route changes. But industry analysts have said they fear tightened restrictions in a new law would also cause travel agencies to increase tour prices over profit concerns.

Chinese people will enjoy a seven-day National Day holiday, often dubbed "Golden Week," from October 1 to 7. The holiday is a prime opportunity for people in China to visit family or tourist attractions.

However, many scenic spots around the country have raised ticket prices to cash in on the holiday in past years, causing public discontent.

The commission has ordered local travel authorities to unveil their detailed discount plans before October 1.
