Female official tried over 60m yuan graft

A FEMALE housing official in northeast China's Liaoning Province planned to flee the country and avoid punishment by marrying an overseas man after taking 60 million yuan (US$8.79 million) in bribes and other payments, a court heard yesterday.

Luo Yaping, 49, director of the Shuncheng District branch of the Fushun City Land and Resource Bureau, is on trial at Shenyang Intermediate People's Court, today's China Youth Daily reported.

She is charged with taking 32 million yuan in bribes and corruption and holding another 28 million yuan and US$690,000 that she couldn't explain, according to the indictment.

Luo allegedly reaped 17 million yuan in the first four months of 2007 by pocketing money from the secret sale of housing allocated for people relocated by development. She is also accused of taking money from 10 faked compensation cases ranging from 500,000 yuan to 3 million yuan.
