Females don't take to stand-up toilet
MOST female students are shying away from newly installed stand-up urinals said to promote water conservation at a university in western China.
Six female urinals housed in individual units were installed in Shaanxi Normal University in Xi'an City, capital of west China's Shaanxi Province, in September. The stand-up urinals require the use of a disposable A-shaped funnel, making it more troublesome and awkward for women, China News Service reported recently.
A sign posted in the toilet stall reads: "If every woman urinates standing, Shaanxi Normal University can save 160 tons of water everyday.?However, the toilet janitor said almost no one used the urinals because of concerns about the hygiene of the funnels and some were even too shy to look at the illustrations.
The main reason the urinals have gone unused is because women are still not comfortable with urinating while standing. More efforts are needed to popularise the idea, said the campaign spearhead, professor Qu Yajun of the university.
The new invention is necessary for the disabled who can't squat over the toilet and the use of the funnel can avoid cross infection, which is also important for healthy women, Qu said.
The university newspaper reported on the female urinals last semester and some booklets introducing the idea have been handed out in campus, a volunteer said.
