Feng shui 'halts' project
A DEVELOPER in Chongqing Municipality has had a new project suspended as it allegedly offended local government's fortune and luck because the site was in front of the doorway of the government's office building.
Wang Yinfeng, Party secretary of Chongqing's Jiangjin District, allegedly told two executives of the developer their new project affected the feng shui of the office building and had to move, according to a voice recording kept by the two executives.
Feng shui, "wind-water' in English, is an ancient Chinese system of aesthetics said to use the laws of heaven (astronomy) and earth (geography) to help one improve life.
Though Wang denied the allegation, the voice recording released online on Thursday has raised public concern.
Wang admitted he had met the men but never thought they would have recorded his voice.
According to the record, a man asked one of the two executives whether he understood feng shui or not.
"The government office cannot function properly anymore because of your building. Do you understand? If I was the Party secretary then, I wouldn't approve your plan absolutely," Wang is heard to say in the recording.
The man was identified as Wang by the two, who were told by Jiangjin's urban planner to suspend construction late July and faced a total loss of 300 million yuan (US$45.11 million), according to the Shanghai Evening Post.
