Film directors told to cut out smoking scene

A smoking control group suggested China's movie makers and actors to butt out on the silver screen as they lure young people into smoking.

Chinese Association of Tobacco Control released statistics of cigarette images in 40 Chinese movies and 30 TV series in 2009.

The Founding of a Republic, a film commemorating the People's Republic's 60th anniversary, contained the most smoking images as the founding fathers of new China puffed their way through 11.76 percent of the movie.

A popuar spy film, The Message, also had its actors smoke in 4.9 percent of the film. The statistics showed that 31 films and 28 TV series had smoking images.

The association said it will urge the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television to ban smoking from the screens.

Eighty-two of the most popular 144 films made between 2004 and 2009 contained smoking acts, Yang Jie, a researcher with China's disease control center said, adding that 60 percent of the smoking images were irrelevant to the story.
