Filmmaker Zhang Yimou pays 7.48m yuan fine for ‘extra’ children

FILMMAKER Zhang Yimou has paid 7.48 million yuan (US$1.2 million) in fines for fathering three “extra” children, the heaviest fine for such an offense.

According to the family planning bureau in Binhu District of the eastern city of Wuxi, the money was transferred to the bank of the authority today. The money will be given to the national treasury, according to related regulations.

The 62-year-old director is famous for film hits such as “House of Flying Daggers” (2004) and for directing the opening and closing of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Since the late 1970s, most couples in China’s urban areas had been allowed only one child and rural couples two in some cases, as the government reined in its birth rate. New policies allowing more flexibility have been released recently.
