Fines for dumped poison waste

A ZHEJIANG Province company has been fined 2.2 million yuan (US$322,425) after 150 tons of its untreated poisonous waste was found dumped in two Anhui Province sites.

Apeloa Tospo Pharmaceutical Co Ltd paid 1.6 million yuan compensation to the Lixin County Environmental Protection Bureau and 600,000 yuan to the Woyang County Environmental Protection Bureau, both in Anhui's Bozhou City, yesterday's Youth Times reported.

Police have detained three villagers for helping with the dumping.

Environmental authorities have taken action to stop the pollution and no casualties have been reported, the report said.

Despite that, the area had a strong pungent smell, according to Wang Huijuan, director of Woyang's environment bureau, who also feared subsequent air pollution.

The bureau started receiving villagers' reports on December 3, she said.

Tests showed the discharge contained substances harmful to the central nervous system. The bureau de-poisoned the discharges and disposed of them.
