'Finger biter' caught after 2 bizarre street attacks

A man who allegedly bit off the fingers of a senior and a boy in separate street attacks last week in Wuhan, capital of Hubei Province, has been nabbed by police.

The 30-year-old attacker torn off the forefinger of an 83-year-old man and bit off the left thumb of a 7-year-old boy in random attacks on February 20 and 21. The victims were rushed to the hospital for replant surgeries, local media reported.

Photos taken from surveillance video showed the man surnamed Zhao committing the assault in pajama and the images stoked fears among the public.

Police arrested Zhao at home on Monday evening after distributing 100,000 print copies of video screenshots to nearby residents in search of the attacker and finally tracked him down.

Police said it is unclear whether Zhao has any mental problems. A psychological test will be conducted soon.

The senior victim, surnamed Du, said he was chatting with others on the street when he felt a sudden pain and found his right forefinger falling to the ground. He didn't even have time to respond when the attacker fled.

The second attack took place the next day and video footage showed the man stalking a mother and a boy for about 20 meters toward a bus stop when he grabbed the boy's hand and bit off his left thumb.

Police are now questioning Zhao about his motives.
