Fire attack on Chinese consulate in San Francisco
The Chinese consulate in San Francisco was damaged after an unidentified person set fire to the entrance, the consulate said in a statement yesterday, in a rare attack on a Chinese mission overseas.
The consulate said the suspect was in a van parked in front of the consulate on Wednesday night, and carried two cans of gasoline to the front door before setting it ablaze. No one was injured in the attack.
The statement said the fire caused serious damage and that San Francisco’s police and fire departments arrived at the scene immediately after the attack.
The consulate called the incident “sabotage of a vile nature” and said China had urged US authorities to launch an immediate investigation. It also said an investigation was underway.
The fire caused “serious damage to the facilities of the consulate and endangered the safety of the consulate officials and the citizens living nearby. We express strong condemnation,” the statement said.
The consulate said it was working with US authorities, and urged them to solve the crime quickly.
The safety of diplomatic missions is a sensitive issue in China after the US military “accidentally” bombed the Chinese embassy in Belgrade during air strikes against Serbia in 1999.
The attack sparked violent anti-NATO demonstrations across China and brought relations with the United States close to a breaking point.
Many Chinese still believe the bombing was intentional.
