Fire in Shenzhen market kills 16, including 3 kids

A FIRE at a market in southern Shenzhen City has killed 16 people, including three children — a 5-year-old girl, a 3-year-old boy and a 14-month girl — who were all living in their stalls during the blaze yesterday.

The fire broke out at the Rongjian Farmers’ Market about 1:30am. It was contained in about two hours, but not before engulfing an area of 1,000 square meters, Xinhua news agency reported.

The fire department sent 29 fire engines carrying 145 fire fighters to the scene. Five people were taken to the hospital, Xinhua said.

According to a local official, the fire started in a temporary construction built in 2008.

A city fire department spokesman told Xinhua that commercial tenants worked and lived in the stores in the wholesale market.

The cause of the blaze was still being investigated.

Security guard Wang Long, who first noticed the fire, said many shop owners and their families live in the market and store their goods there. The manager of the market was taken into police custody.

China has a poor record on workplace safety. A fire at a poultry slaughterhouse in the northeastern province of Jilin in June killed 120 people, which was blamed on poor management, lack of government oversight and locked or blocked exits.

Industrial accidents in the huge coal mining industry is also common. More than 1,300 people died last year.
