'Fire pit' filled in after three kids burnt

WORKERS in northwest China have filled in a mysterious fiery pit where three children were burnt by the dust.

The eight-meter-deep and 50-meter-wide hole in Urumqi, capital of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, is now filled with sand and waste, with a sign warning anyone from coming close.

A stone mining company which dug and filled the pit said it was among 100 holes left by them and it was nothing special.

A 12-year-old boy who slid into the hole to play got his feet charred on Monday. His mother rushed him to hospital after finding his feet bloody with blisters, reported website Yaxin.com today.

A doctor said the boy suffered second-degree burns and could be discharged from the hospital within a week.

The boy's mother blamed an animal husbandry company nearby for dumping dangerous chemicals into the pit, which caused the burns.

The company denied the accusation, saying it didn't dump anything.

Another two children were also burnt in the pit last year. One of them recovered after two months' treatment, and the other is still in bed after four operations.

Mystery also loomed in central China where experts were investigating hair which was believed to belong to an unknown creature-the wild man.

A peasant named Ding Fei found the strange hair on July 4 on his way to find some herbs in the Shennongjia Nature Reserve, where the wild man was spotted before.

The hair is red, white and black and is curly and thick, unlike human or animal hair, said Yang Kaihua, a naturalist with a local research center.

More evidence is needed to confirm the existence of the creature.
