Fireworks factory blasts kill 3 workers

Blasts at a fireworks plant early yesterday killed three workers and wounded 53 others in Shangrao City in east China’s Jiangxi Province, officials said. One person remains missing.

The first blast ripped through a workshop at Hongsheng fireworks factory in Kunshan Village, Guangfeng District, at around 12:30am. Several more blasts followed, officials said.

Fifty-three people were sent to hospital. Two of them were severely injured, 13 were treated for slight injuries and the remaining 38 sustained superficial injuries, officials said.

The blasts at the factory, which employees about 70 workers, shattered windows 1 kilometer away.

Jiangxi Daily said the blasts were so huge that people living in other districts felt their homes shaking.

“I felt the building was about to collapse. Choking smoke was spreading everywhere. We all cried for help,” factory worker Peng Huazhi told the provincial news portal jxnews.com.cn.

Peng said she returned to her dorm to sleep at around 10pm on Tuesday. She was awoken by huge blasts and fled the dorm, sustaining dozens of cuts on her face and body in the process, the website reported.

The plant and the 31 other factories in the area, which has a 300-year history of fireworks manufacturing, have production permits.

Plant executives have been detained by police for questioning, officials said.

Over 1,000 people living nearby have been evacuated to safe areas, officials said, and plans are being made to help people whose homes are damaged cope with falling temperatures.
