Fireworks safety review ordered after 21 deaths
CHINA has issued an urgent order to local authorities to strengthen safety measures after an explosion triggered by Lunar New Year fireworks killed at least 21 people and injured 48 in a southern village.
The State Council's Work Safety Commission said yesterday in a notice that authorities around the country should learn from the mistakes that caused the blast on Friday in the southern province of Guangdong, the deadliest accident of the 15-day Spring Festival.
Local governments and relevant departments should step up efforts to monitor firework safety, the circular said.
All work safety departments across China should overhaul firework producers, wholesalers and retailers. No sales should be made to units or individuals who did not have permits to set off large-scale or powerful fireworks.
Stockpiles should be limited at retail sites and no fireworks should be allowed near retail sites, according to the circular.
Fireworks should be properly reclaimed after the festival, the circular added.
Rescuers found 13 bodies at the site of the accident in Shiqiaotou Village of Puning City on Friday evening where a family were setting off firecrackers.
It is believed a flame ignited other fireworks on the ground and caused the huge explosion.
Eight people died in hospital.
Doctors said seven people had serious or life-threatening injuries.
Police and safety officials have begun an overhaul of the sale, storage, transport and the use of fireworks in Puning City.
