Firm fined for Great Wall damage

A WIND power company has been fined 400,000 yuan (US$61,728) for illegal installation of wind turbines that damaged about 2 kilometers of one of the oldest sections of the Great Wall in central China's Henan Province.

The 1 billion yuan project by Henan Zhongtou Yingke Co Ltd has been suspended after the damage was discovered on the wall in Yexian County, said Li Shujin, head of a local cultural relics bureau.

Inspectors found nearly 20 sections of the wall damaged, including one that stretched up to 300 meters, on April 19. The wall dates back to the Spring and Autumn Period (771 to 403BC), over 400 years older than the sections that stretch over the rolling hills north of Beijing, Beijing Times reported yesterday.

Li said they had told the company to revise the location of the wind turbines after reviewing the project application early last year. But the project went ahead without final approval from the county government. Huang Minmin, an executive of the project, admitted they had kicked off construction without authorization.
