Firm put industrial lard in food, recall ordered

THE biggest grease manufacturer in southwest China has been ordered to recall its edible lard products, which were said to be processed with industrial lard, banned as a food additive.

The Fengrui Grease Co Ltd in Kunming, capital of Yunnan Province, was found in a raid on May 18 to mix industrial lard, made from pork residues unfit for human consumption, into three Jixiang brand refined lard products to cut costs. Authorities have suspended production and seized its food production certificate, National Business Daily reported yesterday.

Many of Fengrui's brands, including the well-known Jixiang brand, were labeled "green" and "non-harmful." The company even has a contract to store cooking oil for the province.

The company said it would make every effort to correct the error, but insisted it purchased the problematic raw lard from Guangdong suppliers. A deputy manager surnamed Zhang told the news paper that they would test the safety of lard products three times before they entered the market.

He didn't mention any problems with company procedures but said, "We never encountered similar cases before. I don't know why our tests failed to detect the substandard products this time."

Authorities have not said what caused the problem, the report said.

A ton of industrial lard costs 3,000 yuan (US$475.2) to 4,000 yuan while a ton of refined lard is 18,000 yuan, the report said.
