Firm told to clear area of wastes
AN aluminum company which had been illegally burying fluoride wastes on a hill in Hunan Province for eight years has been ordered to clean up the toxic wastes by the environmental authorities, the Beijing News reported yesterday.
The company, a branch of Suntown Technology Co, in Changde City built two landfills with coal dust and dangerous wastes.
But Taoyuan Town villagers said the company was also burying fluoride wastes on top of a hill since 2006.
Villagers claimed water containing the unprocessed toxic wastes flowed into their farmlands, damaging their crops and animals as well as causing diseases among the locals.
Song Hongfa, the general manager of the company, admitted that the fluoride wastes buried on the hill top were from their company but did not know who buried them there.
Song told the paper that the company will also process the wastes in the company’s two landfills.
Environmental authorities have asked the company to clean up the area within a week. The company has been ordered to send the wastes to certified landfills after processing them at their plant.
