First baby bottle safety standards for next year

CHINA will next year introduce its first safety standards for baby bottles, with criteria including the size of parts and a list of banned chemicals.
Although China is a major exporter of baby bottles, it lacks a common standard for the product at home, Liang Mei, secretary general of the China Toy and Juvenile Products Association, said yesterday.
Areas covered by the standard include: ink quality, the quality of the teat, the size of parts and banned chemicals.
“Currently, manufacturers can only follow national standards for ordinary bottles and containers, making it difficult for the authorities to supervise,” Liang said.
Specific safety standards will stop manufacturers who use cheap and potentially harmful raw materials in baby bottles to keep prices down, she added.
Other industry figures agreed.
“Manufacturers of cheap baby bottles at around 10 yuan (US$1.6) can hardly ensure quality and safety,” said Zheng Dayong, quality management manager of Goodbaby, a major baby products manufacturer.
The Baby Bottle Safety Standard that is being drafted by the association and the major Chinese manufacturers will be issued next March, said Liang.
“It will be in accord with those of the Europe and United States to make it convenient for exporters,” she added.
