First foreign flight captain appointed

CHINA has recruited its first foreign female flight captain, Xinhua News Agency reported today.

The captain has passed her examinations and is just awaiting her official certificate. She has signed a three-year contract with Shenzhen Airlines.

The woman, whose name was not revealed in the agency story, is from Denmark and is an experienced flight captain, said Li Zeyuan, an official with Shenzhen Airlines. She has mostly flown the new generation of Boeing 737s and has logged more than 8,000 hours of flying time, 5,000 hours as a captain, Li said.

She has more than 10 years flying experience - an average 600 flying hours a year.

Shenzhen Airlines began to recruit foreign pilots from 2002. More than 70 foreign pilots are working for the airline and more will be hired in the next two years, Li said.

With the new recruit there will now be six female pilots working for Shenzhen Airlines - three captains and three co-pilots.
