First group of 823 most talented picked to get 1m yuan each for study

A GROUP of 823 leaders in various fields in China has been picked to join a state-initiated national talent project that involves grants and other incentives.

The group is the first chosen for the what is known as the “10,000 plan,” a program unveiled in 2012 that eventually is expected to benefit some 10,000 gifted experts and innovators, classified into three groups, within 10 years, People’s Daily reported.

The plan calls for selection of 100 regarded as having the potential to win a Nobel Prize and become world-class scientists. The second group would include 8,000 leaders and pioneers in fields such as engineering, philosophy, science and technological innovation. The third group would be 2,000 top-notch young people under age of 35.

The central government has now selected six potential Nobel Prize nominees. Four are academicians of China Academy of Science. The government has also picked 618 leaders for the second group and 199 for the third, the newspaper reported.

Those chosen from different regions and fields were expected to be brought together to enjoy the “special support,” said an official with the central office of personnel coordination.

They each would receive about 1 million yuan (US$164,100) for research and study. The nation also would provide other incentives to facilitate their work and encourage their exploration.
