Fish choked to death by sewage in a Nanjing river

THOUSANDS of fish were killed in the Qinhuai River in Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, after domestic sewage was discharged into the river while a local water treatment plant was closed for maintenance, Nanjing government said.

Initial investigation showed the river was polluted after the water treatment plant halted its operation for maintenance, Xinhua reported today.

Tens of thousands of fish went belly up in a 2-kilometer section of the river that was once the boundary of the ancient Chinese capital, giving off strong rotten smell.

Inspectors from the municipal and district environmental protection bureaus began an investigation on Monday to find the cause of the mass fish die-off.

They soon discovered that the river water deteriorated after domestic waste from several residential complexes was discharged directly into the river because the water treatment plant was undergoing a maintenance work.
