Fish sales ban after spill

FISH farms in two counties on the lower reaches of a contaminated river in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region have been banned from selling their fish.

Fishermen from the Liujiang and Liucheng counties of Liuzhou City can't sell farmed or wild fish from the Longjiang River, site of a cadmium spill, the city's fishery, animal husbandry and veterinary bureau has ruled.

The two counties are in the downstream section of the Longjiang River, just before it joins the Liujiang River, which runs through Liuzhou.

The contamination was first detected on January 15, in the upstream city of Hechi on the Longjiang River, after fishermen found fish dying in large numbers.

"The once-green river turned black around January 10 and many small fish died. In the following days, more fish died, so we reported to the local environmental protection bureau," said local fisherman Huang Chaoxin.

A similar ban is in place in Hechi. As of January 31, about 10,000 kilograms of adult fish had died in Hechi alone.
