Fisherman sentenced
A CHINESE fisherman has been given a 6-month suspended sentence and fined 1 million yen (US$13,100) by a court in Japan's Nagasaki Prefecture, Chinese consulate-general officials said yesterday.
The court ruled that Zhong Jinyin had offended the country's fishing order by operating illegally in Japanese territorial waters for coral.
The prison term was suspended for three years.
Officials at the Chinese Consulate-General in Nagasaki said Zhong had accepted the ruling and was transferred to the Fukuoka Regional Immigration Bureau after paying the fine.
They said he was expected to be repatriated in the next couple of days.
Zhong was the captain of a fishing boat found operating off the Goto Islands in southwestern Nagasaki Prefecture.
He had been in detention since December 20.
