Five acquitted of murder 16 years later

FIVE men who were wrongly convicted of a murder were acquitted today at a court in Hangzhou, capital of Zhejiang Province after spending 16 years in prison.

Chen Jianyang, Tian Weidong, Tian Xiaoping and Zhu Youping were convicted of robbing and killing a taxi driver in March 1995 in the city's Xiaoshan District. Three of them were also indicted for a robbery in the same area in August 1995.

Two years later Tian Xiaoping was sentenced to life imprisonment while the other four were given suspended death penalty.

The Zhejiang Provincial High People's Court acquitted the five men of murder today. But Chen and Tian Weidong are still guilty of a theft in September 1995, and Tian Xiaoping are guilty of two robberies in October 1995, Beijing News reported.

Chen and Tian Weidong were sentenced to another year in prison while Tian Xiaoping will stay behind the bars for three more years, the paper reported.

The real killer of the woman taxi driver, Xiang Shengyuan, did not surface until July 2011 when police conducting an anti-theft campaign found his fingerprints matched those found at the scene of the taxi robbery.

In May, the Zhejiang Provincial High Court approved a retrial of the five convicts and the Jiaxing City Intermediate People's Court sentenced Xiang to death with a two-year reprieve.
