Five crew members of Taiwanese fishing vessel rescued in N. Philippines

FIVE crew members of a Taiwanese fishing vessel were rescued off Itbayat Island in northern Philippines on Tuesday, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said Wednesday.

PCG said in a statement that the fishing vessel FV Jui Fa Tsai carrying two from China's Taiwan and three from Indonesia ran aground at 16 nautical miles northeast off Itbayan Island in Batanes Province at 6:50am, Tuesday.

A search and rescue team was immediately dispatched to the area to assist the distressed crew members.

Taiwan coast guard authority coordinated with the PCG and the Department of Foreign Affairs before dispatching its own vessel to assist in the rescue operation.

Coast Guard spokesman Commander Armand Balilo said the Philippine government has no information concerning the activity of the fishing vessel.

"The local government has no report of what were they were doing there. They may have passed only and ran aground because they are not familiar with the area," said Balilo.

At 3:39pm Tuesday, the five crew members were successfully rescued and the fishing vessel was extracted from where it ran aground.

The rescued crew members, who were unhurt, were brought back to China's Taiwan.
