Five killed in crawfish restaurant fire

Sixteen people trapped inside a crawfish restaurant in Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu Province, during a fire yesterday evening were rescued by firefighters but five of the injured later died from serious wounds at hospitals, Jiangsu local media reported today.

The fire broke out about 10pm yesterday evening. A dozen diners and several workers were inside the restaurant when the blaze took place with the exit blocked by fire over only dozens of seconds, the local Modern Express reported.

Firefighters had to break open wall of a next-by store to get in to reach victims trapped inside.

The fire was put out about 10 minutes later. But five of the injured victims died at hospitals. The owner of the restaurant is being investigated by police.

A witness, one of the customers, reportedly recalled seeing a light atop the entrance gate twinkling and then a ball of fire fell off, which might have ignited the styrofoam boxes left on the ground to store crawfishes and caused the fire.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated by authority.
