Five killed in path washout in Fujian

THREE children were among five people killed when a mountain path in east China's Fujian Province collapsed on to a coal miners' shed following a sudden rainstorm early yesterday.

The collapse occurred in Xiayang Village, Xiayang Township of Yongchun County, around 11:30 am yesterday, according to a statement from the county committee of the Communist Party of China.

The shed was occupied at the time by two miners and three children from one family who had traveled with their mother from Jiangxi Province to visit their father, who was working at the coal mine.

More than 100 people immediately began trying to dig those buried from the debris.

The bodies of the victims, all residents of Shangrao, Jiangxi, were recovered by 4:30 pm yesterday, said the statement.

The two miners were identified by their surnames as Huang, 40, and Zhou, 52. The three children -- two girls aged 13 and 9, and one boy aged 11 -- were identified only by their family name of Zhao. Their parents were away from the shed when the accident happened.
