Five punished in suspect's death
FIVE law enforcement officers have been disciplined over the sudden death of an official under interrogation in a prosecutor's office in southwestern China's Yunnan Province.
A deputy prosecutor general in Zhaoyang District People's Procuratorate in Yunnan's Zhaotong City has been suspended from duty and put under investigation because of the death of Wei Jingling on March 26 during interrogation, Spring City Evening News reported yesterday.
Three anti-corruption officials and a police officer in charge of Wei's case were all put under "double-designation" status, the report said. This is where a Party official is ordered to explain allegations of disciplinary violations or corruption at a designated time and place.
Wei, 52, was a section chief in the district education office and being investigated on suspicion of accepting bribes.
She was found to have a cut on her chest and died before she was sent to hospital, medical staff confirmed.
Local authorities last week promised further investigation into Wei's death.
Meanwhile, Wei's family denied any possibility that she might have committed suicide, but refused to disclose any more details of her death to newspaper reporters.
"There are too many doubts about her death, but we're unwilling to discuss any more before the investigation result is issued," Wei's two younger brothers told Spring City Evening News.
Wei was the latest in a nationwide string of deaths in custody to come under investigation.
The sudden death of a theft suspect in custody in central China's Jiangxi Province recently triggered suspicion among his family.
Police said the man died from a heart attack triggered by falling in a toilet, but his kin claim the body was covered with wounds and had a blood-filled nose and mouth.
Chen Xujin died 40 days after being taken into custody in Xiushui County, accused of stealing wine, according to Southern Metropolis Daily.
Meanwhile, two police chiefs in central Henan Province lost their jobs and four officers were investigated for torturing a detainee to death and covering it up by saying he died after drinking a cup of hot water.
