Five terrorist suspects caught with 1.8 tons of explosives in Xinjiang, police say
A GROUP of five terrorist suspects were caught Monday, along with 1.8 tons of materials for producing explosives, in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, police said.
An initial investigation found the suspects were incited to launch an attack after watching video footage about terrorism.
Police said the five visited several cities to buy explosive materials and started to make bombs after a five-member terrorist gang carried out the worst attack in five years in the far western region, which killed 39 people and injured another 94 in the region’s capital of Urumqi on May 22.
They had planned to perpetrate a similar crime – driving vehicles into people and detonating the bombs in a crowded place in south Xinjiang’s Hotan area, local news portal, www.ts.cn, reported.
Xinjiang has suffered several terrorist attacks recently, including one in which three people were killed and 79 injured on April 30 at a railway station in Urumqi. Xinjiang police announced the start of a province-wide anti-terror operation on May 23. They say it will last until June 2015.
The Ministry of Public Security said Chinese police are also starting a year-long, nationwide anti-terror campaign. The ministry asked police in Xinjiang and in the rest of the country to cooperate and launch a strong and joint offensive against terrorism.
