Five workers confirmed dead in flooded coal mine
THREE more bodies had been recovered from a flooded coal mine in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province by yesterday morning, raising the death toll to five, local authorities said.
By 7am yesterday, emergency workers had rescued four miners but were still searching for another seven.
The accident occurred about 5:30am on Saturday when 22 miners were working underground at the Jinli coal mine in Jidong County, Jixi City. Six escaped, said Jixi city government.
About 4,000 cubic meters of water gushed into the shaft and it will take workers using six pumps about three days to remove it, said Jixi Vice Mayor Wang Guangyue.
The coal mine is owned by the Tianyuan Company.
