Flies can lower public toilet hygiene grade

CHINA'S health authorities are considering using the number of flies as an index to grade the hygiene level of a public toilet, the Beijing Times reported yesterday.

Toilets inside public buildings should have no more than one fly per square meter while stand-alone toilets should have no more than three flies per square meter. No maggots should be found in the manure pit.

In the draft Sanitation Standards for Public Toilets, the officials also listed standards for odor control, toilet cleaning, and equipment disinfection.

Since most women complained about inadequate stalls, the draft regulations stipulate that if men and women are equal in number, the number of stalls for women should double that for men.

The draft also requires partitions between urinals in men's room and doors for toilet stalls.

The Ministry of Health is now soliciting public opinions and suggestions for the draft regulations.
