Floating bank notes revive interest in unsolved case

THE sighting of bank notes drifting down a stream in east China might shed light on a 13-year-old unsolved case in which 7.5 million yuan (US$1.16 million) worth of bank notes mysteriously turned into blank paper in a bank vault, Qianjiang Evening News reported today.

Police in Wenzhou, Zhejiang Province said they had collected the notes totaling 7,000 yuan after a fisherman surnamed Huang saw them floating down a stream on Wednesday, the report said.

The notes, each with face value of 1 jiao (1.54 US cents), reminded a veteran policeman surnamed Zhou of a mysterious case he failed to solve more than a decade ago.

Zhou said three bundles of newly-printed bank notes stored in a bank vault in Wenzhou turned into white paper overnight in 1997. Police tried to crack the case but failed.

Zhou said the notes drifting down in the stream might be part of the missing cash as the thieves might have dumped small-value notes in the river to expedite their escape.

But Wenzhou police said the finding could not establish a connection with the 13-year-old case.
